Sutherland Secondary School
The replacement Sutherland Secondary School is designed for a capacity of 1000 students on the existing school site. The school is designed along a main corridor that connects four academic wings running east-west. Interior glazing along the main corridor provides partitions for a series of student spaces and administrative offices while providing transparency and natural daylight to fill the main corridor of the school.
On the second floor, the main corridor connects to the upper floor of the gym and fitness room. Classroom windows face north and south to minimize low angle sunlight and heat gain. A steel roof and concrete tilt-up exterior walls are coloured sympathetically to the treed site wrapping down as a façade running east/west with sunshades articulating the few east and west facing window.
